Chicago got an elite performance from starting pitcher Unkei Wakamatsu in taking a 3-1 decision over the Washington Nationals. George Poirier converted his 28th save in 28 tries. The first-place Cubs, at 83-38, now lead their division by 12½ games.
Andy Wasierski aided the Chicago cause with a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the second. For the game, the designated hitter drove in one run.
"This was a tough loss," said Washington manager Mike Shore. "It'll stick in my craw for a while."
