The Pittsburgh Pirates got a superb performance from designated hitter Pat Sutton, but the San Diego Padres still won the game, 9-8. Sutton belted 3 home runs, while adding 6 RBI and scoring three times. San Diego pitcher Raul Almonte got the win, upping his record to 7-1. Steve Grier got the loss. The win gives San Diego a season record of 61-16.

San Diego used the clutch hitting of Jorge Severiano to capture the win. The right fielder drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to give the Padres the lead, 8-7. For the game, Severiano had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Severiano said after the game.
