Phillies Prevail, 3-2, Over Washington
|
The Philadelphia Phillies topped the Washington Nationals, 3-2, in National League action at Citizens Bank Park. The game was highlighted by the performance of Philadelphia pitcher Marko Emchenko. Emchenko went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. His record improves to 5-7. Earning the save was Justin Howard. He's now cashed in 25 of 28 save opportunities.
Had Matt Sanders not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Sanders hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 1-0, in favor of the Phillies.
"This was a tough loss," said Washington manager Mike Shore. "It'll stick in my craw for a while."
The victory gives Philadelphia a record of 45-42.
