Mellon Gets 5 Hits Sunday, December 3rd , 2045 All game long, University of Maine's Jay Mellon was rattling the walls at Goss Stadium and banging out base hits against the Oregon State University Beavers. When the dust finally settled on the diamond, he had a 5-hit day and the Black Bears had a 18-11 victory. Speaking with reporters after his standout performance, the 17-year-old left fielder said, "Get 5 hits, win a ballgame, it's nice. I could get used to this." Jay Mellon hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, hit a two-run single in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Jim Unknown in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and walked in the 9th. Mellon is hitting .288 this year with 6 home runs, 36 RBIs and 37 runs scored. He has 55 hits in 191 at-bats, 23 walks and a .363 on-base percentage. Mellon has played in 46 games. |
