Hits Galore: Vargas Drills 5 Hits
The Aberdeen Ironbirds downed the Staten Island Yankees 6-3 today at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, in spite of the best efforts of Staten Island left fielder Francisco Vargas. Vargas lashed the ball all over the park in a 5-hit explosion, finishing with a 5-for-8 line -- and a loss.

"I don't remember a better day batting, but it sure is disappointing to lose the game," he said to BNN reporters in the postgame interview. "A win would have made the day much sweeter."

Asked if he would adjust his strategy next time the Ironbirds face Vargas, Aberdeen manager James Roche said "absolutely not."

"Our strategy was to not give him good pitches to hit," he said. "We didn't do that, and he worked us over. Thankfully, we won anyway, and next time we'll pitch to him better."

Francisco Vargas singled in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, walked in the 7th, flied out in the 9th, singled in the 12th, singled in the 15th, singled in the 17th and singled in the 19th.

To date this season Vargas is hitting .370 with 1 home run.
