The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a win at Busch Stadium, knocking off the Washington Nationals, 4-3. Starting pitcher Tsugunosuke Murakami played a key role in the triumph. Murakami, the winner, moves to 1-2. He threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 9 and giving up 2 walks. The 4th-place Cardinals improved to 48-55.
The Cardinals got a big at-bat from shortstop Klaas Meij. For the game, Meij went 1-3 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 3rd home run of the season gave St. Louis a 4-3 lead.
Meij called the win "a lesson in teamwork."
