Nationals Fall Short, 5-4, at New York
|
The New York Mets did just enough to secure a victory over the Washington Nationals, 5-4, at Citi Field. Nobody did more than pitcher Ron Hawkins. Brian Wood earned his 1st save in 2 chances. The Mets go to 71-74, putting them second in the National League East Division.
In the bottom of the sixth, New York left fielder Sal Fernandez put his team on top. With two out and runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit his 13th double of the year. Washington pitcher Julio Pizano served it up. Just like that, the Mets were ahead, 4-3.
"This kind of win will certainly make our fans happy," Hawkins told the New York Observer.
