Smith Sizzles -- Smokes Black Bears for 5 Hits Monday, January 1st , 2046 Even as a kid, Gary Smith said his coaches told him the key to hitting was making contact, and letting everything else flow from there. At Mahaney Diamond today, Smith showed how well he learned that lesson. The 18-year-old third baseman had 5 hits in 5 at-bats for the Oregon State University Beavers, helping his team knock off the University of Maine Black Bears by a score of 7-2. "They always said, just keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing, make contact and you never know what will happen," he said. "That's all I did today." Gary Smith singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit a sac fly in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off German Baez in the 8th and singled in the 9th. Thus far this year Smith has hit .329 with 18 home runs and 88 RBIs. |
