Cougars Flame Out Against Rayburn, Fighting Illini
Monday, November 18th , 2047
There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.
Josh Rayburn of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini blanked the Washington State University Cougars, 5-0, at Illinois Field today, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 4-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.
"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Rayburn said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."
Rayburn walked 2 and struck out 5 in the victory.
"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Cougars manager Jonathan Gonzales said later.
For the year Rayburn has 8 relief appearances and a 4-0 record with 1 save. He has logged 39 innings and allowed 35 base hits. Opposing clubs have put up a .235 batting average against him. Rayburn has rung up 35 strikeouts, surrendered 14 walks and fashioned a 4.38 ERA.
