Red-Hot van den Berg Scorches Phillies
The New York Mets stopped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 11-5 at Citi Field today, with the lion's share of the credit going to shortstop Nelle van den Berg. The 31-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits.

"Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," van den Berg said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard."

van den Berg did just that in his 5 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Phillies.

"Not much that I can say," offered Philadelphia manager Paul Husch. "He just hammered the heck out of us."

Nelle van den Berg doubled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Brian Thomas in the 5th and singled in the 7th.

So far this season van den Berg has put up a .220 batting average with 60 hits, 11 home runs and 51 RBIs.
