No-Hit Masterpiece by Varela
Thursday, October 1st , 2048
In a dominant outing, Alexis Varela of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers totally silenced the bats of the University of Southern California Trojans, finishing with a no-hitter.
In the Golden Gophers' 3-0 victory, Varela faced only 29 batters, surrendered no hits, had 16 strikeouts and 1 walk.
"Honestly, I didn't even know the situation was what it was until the seventh inning," University of Minnesota manager Conor Kerins said. "I happened to look up there to see how many hits we had gotten, and I happened to notice that they hadn't gotten any."
Commenting on the defeat, losing manager Robby Venega had a "pretty simple" analysis of the game.
"The Golden Gophers had all the hits and all the runs, so they won," he snapped. "But yeah, Varela pitched a heck of a ballgame."
This year Varela has posted a 2-0 mark in 6 starts and has a 0.68 ERA.
