Extra-Inning Win by Nationals Over Phillies
|
Philadelphia got a terrific performance from pitcher Matt Evans, but it wasn't enough to beat the Washington Nationals. Washington won the Citizens Bank Park contest, 2-1. Evans threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. George Kellum, now 5-6, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 1 and walking 1. Washington, at 46-63, holds down third place in the National League East Division.
Washington used the timely hitting of Tommy Baird to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Nationals on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
Baird called the win the result of "everyone working in tandem."
