All the votes have been tabulated and the recipient of the prestigious American League Rookie of the Year Award is Joey Pacheco of Montreal.
This gifted first-year performer won the honors by batting .291 with a .390 OBP. In 159 games this year, the shortstop laced 161 hits in 554 at-bats, hit 30 home runs, drove in 112 runs and scored 88 times.
