Spillers Bangs Out 5 Base Hits
Thursday, December 23rd , 2049
A jubilant Scott Spillers joined the postgame press conference at Evans Diamond today to offer some unusual words of encouragement -- for the University of California Golden Bears pitching staff he had just vanquished.
"It may not have looked like it," said the Washington State University Cougars right fielder, "but I saw some awful good pitches today. If luck hadn't been on my side it might have turned out a lot different."
That would not have been the conclusion of anyone who saw his dominant 5-for-6 hitting performance, which led the Cougars to a 13-3 win.
"He made it look easy," said Hunter Watson, manager of the Golden Bears. "We never figured out what to do with him. Obviously."
Scott Spillers doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
For the season, Spillers is hitting at a .307 clip with 19 home runs, 68 RBIs and has scored 65 runs. He has 123 hits, 35 walks and a .367 on-base percentage.
