Thrice Is Nice: Perla Unloads 3 Homers
Saturday, September 1st , 2046
It's a rare event when a player hits three homers in a game and rarer still when he does it and loses.
It happened at First Energy Park today, as Pete Perla of the Hartford Yard Goats unloaded three times against the Lakewood BlueClaws but was still bumped off 5-4 by the BlueClaws.
"We were lucky to win today," said Lakewood skipper Marcos Gomez. "You can't give up that many home runs and expect to win on a regular basis."
For the game, the Hartford shortstop had 4 hits in 6 at-bats, scored 3 times, and drove in 4.
Perla spoke to the writers in the postgame press room with mixed feelings, saying he was sad to lose but happy to be seeing the ball well.
"I was just trying to swing early and often to give myself a chance," he said. "I let the pitcher supply all the power and try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."
Pete Perla struck out in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off John Hughes in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Seizaburo Takahashi in the 7th, hit a solo-shot off Mike Aldrich in the 9th and grounded out in the 10th.
Perla is hitting .324 this year with 9 home runs, 25 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He has 33 hits in 102 at-bats, 8 walks and a .389 on-base percentage. Perla has played in 28 games.
