Hepburn Big Deal in Seattle (APP): Hits for Cycle
Friday, September 30th , 2050
Matt Hepburn did everything he could for the Seattle (APP) Mariners today -- literally.
The 21-year-old center fielder hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Mariners, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Greeneville Astros, 13-5, at Pioneer Park.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Hepburn reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Hepburn banged out 4 hits in 6 at-bats and totaled 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Matt Hepburn doubled in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, grounded out in the 8th, tripled in the 11th, hit a solo-shot off Victor Silva in the 13th and walked in the 13th.
For the season Hepburn is currently batting .261 with 18 home runs and 80 RBIs. In 123 games he has reached base at a .345 rate and scored 90 runs to date.
