After a 5-hit effort to lead Johnson City's 42-41 victory over the Bristol Pirates, left fielder Travis Ruppel told BNN beat writers it had been "a special day."

"It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college, two hits in a game is nice," he said. "Three or four is better, but five or more is out of sight. And to do that at the Appalachian League-level is really something special."

The 20-year-old player earned his accolades today at Howard Johnson Field with a spectacular 5-for-6 game against the Pirates.

"His swing is getting there," said Cardinals skipper Julio Rivero, who spoke glowingly of Ruppel after the game. "We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. Travis did that to perfection today."

Travis Ruppel walked in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 3rd, walked in a run in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Perry Dominey in the 5th, struck out in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th, walked in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

This season Ruppel has delivered 164 hits in 469 at-bats for a .350 average with 46 home runs. He is getting on base at a .479 clip and his totals also include 155 RBIs and 170 runs scored. This year Ruppel has played in 121 games.
